At work, in Canada

As an employee in Canada, you have to adjust. Things are quite different. You have far fewer rights and far more obligations. You can easily get fired. In quite a few professions, it is the most normal thing in the world that you supply your own materials.

If you are new to Canada, it is unlikely that you will be able to join a union. This leaves you with minimal government regulations, which are very lenient (for businesses).

It is also notable that in Canada the regulations are often arranged by province. Here and there therefore somewhat better than elsewhere.

Undocumented in Canada, niet om aan te raden.

Working and not whining please. You are often hired quickly but that means you can also be fired quickly.

A point that many immigrants stumble over is the lack of vacation. To start with, you are entitled to two weeks per year. A bonus such as vacation pay is unknown. This contributes significantly to the fact that many Canadians rarely go on real vacation.

Some may end up getting as long as three weeks – but more than that is exceptional.

If you were to get sick, you would only use your vacation days for that. At many companies you are "allowed" to be sick for a limited number of days per year. Often no more than five.

Working hours, in many industries, are not really regulated. You can be lucky or you can be unlucky. If you can't, then there may be a problem. Childcare is a huge obstacle for which there is almost no solution.

General provisions such as pension accrual are poorly arranged.

Many employees have little connection with the company they work for, no wonder when you are treated so badly. It is a place to make a little money and then get out of there.

The working conditions are not good

Canada is a bit behind when it comes to working conditions, and for those who are not quick to adapt, this could be a significant problem.

It is not unthinkable to be put off by the work situation in Canada. The motivation among many employees is sometimes difficult to fathom. Wouldn't another job be more pleasant?
