Going to school in Canada

In Canada, to start with, children go to school a few years later. There is no compulsory education, but there are public schools everywhere. There are enormous differences in the school system from one province to another. Quite a few parents teach their children at home.

Secondary school is, in principle, the same for everyone. There are very few schools with anything other than a public approach.

The private schools that exist cost a lot and receive virtually no subsidies. The vocational schools and universities also cost a fortune.

Parents who come from other countries quickly notice that the curriculum in Canada is often far behind

In Canada's public school system, a lot of money is spent on picking up and dropping off children by school bus.

The less time and attention is spent on education, the schools keep the children occupied for a number of hours. People don't want to know much about language knowledge, world knowledge, social knowledge and so many other subjects.

It seems that the schools are there to get through the children who have the hardest time learning. Anyone who can learn better quickly becomes very bored.

There are significant differences between some schools and especially school districts. Parents often choose not to live somewhere because the school is not well known.

The differences in teaching between the Canadian provinces are often very large, so that insurmountable problems can immediately arise when moving.

Universities and vocational schools also vary widely. What they do have in common is the habit of charging huge tuition and fees.

Schools: something simple made difficult

The incoherent school system in Canada has caused many parents to sigh. Could this really not be better?

It could be said that the school system reflects the conditions in society. Or is it exactly the other way around?

Quite a few immigrants are affected by the education system in Canada. Because yes, it could indeed be a lot better.

Mediocre schools, mediocre cultural interests?
